Cars / Category B

You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

You can also tow heavier trailers if the total weight of vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg. The fully loaded trailer can’t weigh more than the unladen vehicle (this only applies to licences issued before 19 January 2013).

Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles.


Able-bodied drivers can no longer ride motor tricycles with a provisional category B licence.

You can drive a category B vehicle - but only an automatic one.

Pass Plus Course

Once you have passed your test it is useful to gain more experience. To help with this it is useful to take a Pass Plus course. This can even help to reduce your insurance costs. The course covers a range of different environments to help you gain that valuable experience. The course entails the following.

Running a car

To help keep your car on the road it is essential that you keep it well maintained. To help you with this the following guide can help keep your car well maintained.
Regular Vehicle Safety Checks (P.O.W.E.R.)


  • ‘P’ stands for Petrol – Always use the correct fuel
  • ‘O’ stands for Oil – Check your oil levels when car is cold
  • ‘W’ stands for water – Check screen wash levels, Check washers are not blocked and work correctly, Ensure Coolant levels are correct
  • ‘E’ stands for electrics – Make sure your lights are clean and check the bulbs regularly to check they are all working.
  • ‘R’ stands for rubber – Tyres, ensure they are correctly inflated and have suitable tread depth. Check Wipers for damage as they may leave streaks.
